It is perhaps one of the rarest medical surgeries done in India. No, it was not done in AIIMS or AFMC or Manipal hospitals in metro cities. But this procedure was performed by expert doctors in the Opec Hospital in Raichur, one of the most backward districts in Karnataka state.
Two years ago when Dr. Pushpanjali Mali Patil performed a surgery and removed a large tumor out of Mahadevamma’s body, she didn’t imagine that this piece of extra growth flesh would fetch her a guinness record!
Raichur (Karnataka)-based gynaecologist Pushpanjali Mali Patil has carved a niche for herself in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records by successfuly removing a tumour weighing 30 kg from the uterus of a 45-year-old labourer.
The feat was accomplished by Dr. Pushpanjali about two years ago at Opec Hospital, Raichur. She had performed a complicated surgical procedure lasting about five hours on one Mahadevamma of Deodurga taluk. Dr. Pushpanjali removed a tumour during this marathon surgery on December 21, 2005. The tumour has been preserved in the museum of OPEC Hospital (Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality Hospital), Raichur.
By removing this tumor, Dr. Pushpanjali broke the existing record of Indore gynaecologist, who had removed a 10.33 kg tumour.
Hospital sources were quoted saying that Mahadevamma was about 65 kg when she was admitted for surgery and after removal of tumor her weight dropped to 31 kg. But the sudden weight loss didn’t cause any grievous problems to Mahadevamma.
In less than two years, she recovered and was back in the fields working as a labourer. Currently she she is working as a labourer in Bangalore. The Guinness book authorities have sent a certificate recognizing the doctor’s achievement.
